Wednesday 9-12-2012

Hi fifth graders!
It was great to hear from you today! Glad you're with us too, Mrs. R and Ari.
We had a rainy day today, but it was still beautiful with the mist all around the mountains. There was actually some new snow up on the highest peaks!
I presented my poster on the Schoolyard Ecology Program at Harvard Forest at a poster session. That's when scientists display and talk about posters they made displaying their research.

It's fun because you can see what everyone else is studying. We will make our own research posters later in the year.
I went to another meeting where all the education people got together and shared what kind of programs they have for elementary, middle, and high school students. Here is a map of the
LTER (Long Term Ecological Research) Sites.

I was thinking about the mountains here, and the elevation here in Estes Park is 8,010 feet above sea level. Briggs is at 292 feet. How much higher is Estes Park? How does that affect the weather? The trees and animals?
Here is a map with Ashburnham and Estes Park marked with a yellow dot. Which town is closer to the equator? How can that affect the weather?
Which do you think affects the weather and climate more? Elevation or latitude (distance from the equator)?
                                                                                                                    I took this picture yesterday!
It is really cold tonight so we made a fire in our fireplace. Good night and be happy- Our earth is a really beautiful place- you will see a lot of amazing things in your life time!

  4. Estes Park is 7,218 feet taller than Briggs. It will make the weather a little colder on the top of the mountain because your closer to the space and there is no gravity in space which will make it cold. If your not on the top of the mountain it will be warmer than Ashburnham.

I love your pictures. You can see the tracking color perfect in one of the pictures! The Estes park is 7,718 feet more than briggs. Estes would be hotter because its higher above sea level, and heat rises. The trees would grow faster because its hotter and the animals would be warm.

  8. Dear,Mrs.Bennett
The elevation is different by 7718 feet that's a lot.I think it affects the animals at Estes Park in climate because the park is so high it must be very cold.It must affect the trees in weather because it must snow a lot in the winter if it's that high up,I would think there would be conifers up there because of there sloped branches they can wipe off snow easily.Estes Park is closer to the equator than Ashburnham is.It makes the weather warmer the closer you are to the equator so I think Colorado is warmer than Ashburnham.I think latitude because the closer you are to the equator the warmer it is like Florida is way warmer than Maine. How are your roommates are they nice?Hope your having fun in Colorado,we miss you lots! 9. Dear Ms. Bennett,
you sure discovered a lot on your trip so far. one thing that i can not believe was that there was new snow on the mountain peak. how much snow was there? what was your poster about? i have so many questions, my hands are starting to fall sleep! who are your cabin roommates? what level do they teach? by the way, nice photo taking. ;) i hope that you are having fun. wow! we are at 292 feet! we are 7718 less than Estes Park.
i think Miami,Florida is closest to the equator. it affects their weather by it being so hot in the morning and close to the afternoon, then rainy in the afternoon until it is night time. i think it would effect the trees and animals by it causing most to die because of the heat and dryness. the trees would not live as long.

  10. I think the new animal would be a bear, with wings so it could fly. The bear, the size of a cat would use his wings as fins to swim with two he would eat fish.

  13. Miss Bennett,
The difference is 7718 i know because I did 8,010 minus 292. That effects the weather because the higher above sea level you are the warmer. I think that the tree would be beautiful and nice and green. There is probably a lot of elk too!
Estes Park is also closer to the equator than Ashburnham.
That Fire place sure looks cozy, it makes me want to sit next to me fire place in my pajamas!
I can't wait until you come back! have a great time!

  14. Mrs. Bennett,
I miss you very much and i hope you did good. I also found out the answer I think it is 7718. I don't know why it would affect the trees and animals i think i would have to think about that more.

The place you are at now would be hotter because its closer to the equator and the equator gives off heat.

I cant wait to see you Monday.

    From Kathleen:)

  15. Ms. Bennett,
Ashburnham is 7,718 ft. lower than Estes National Park. The Asian Longhorn Beetle is killing a lot of trees. I hope you're having a good time!

  17. Dear Mrs. Bennett,
That`s a nice fireplace, i can feel it from here. 7718 feet is how much higher i think its hard to do the math without a paper. Weather must be warmer because its closer to the equator right? Estes Park is closer i believe. I would think latitude affects the climate more. the pictures are cool my favorite is the moving fire place love! The trees are starting to loose their leaves there. Today's open house sad you can be here but see you Monday.

    Your thinking buddy,
    Nicolette
