Monday, Sept. 9

Dear fifth graders,
What an exciting two days I've had here!! I flew in to Denver Saturday night and rented a car to drive up here to Estes Park. It is northwest of Denver, right next to Rocky Mountain National Park.

I am staying in a cabin here at the YMCA of the Rockies with three of the ladies from Harvard Forest.
That's my cool red rental car in the back!

The name of the cabin is Kum Ba Yah-like the old song. We thought that was funny! It is so beautiful here in the mountains. There are deer and elk, and someone saw a bear but I haven't yet!
On Sunday I presented some of the work I've done at Harvard Forest. Looks like I'm the only elementary teacher here- It's a big responsibility representing elementary school! I keep bragging how awesome you all are!
I went to a lecture this morning by a scientist from the National Science Foundation. He was talking about how new species are still evolving! Imagine a species that would evolve that is adapted to survive in our environment now. What would it eat? Where would it live? You can tell me your ideas by commenting on this blog.
I met a scientist from Alaska today. There are people here from all over the world. She's going to send us some pictures.
One more question before I go. Here is a picture of the forest in the mountains here. How do you think they are different from the forest in Ashburnham? How are they the same?

Miss you all and Ms. Gera too.
Ms. Bennett

  6. Mrs. Bennett- the picture of the forest is both different and the same than the forests in Ashburnham. One way they are the same is the both have trees. Another way they are the same is that the trees are dark green and we have dark green trees too! one way they are different is we don't have many mountains or tall rocks that I know about.
we all miss you and we all cant wait until you come back and tell us about your trip.

  7. Mrs. Bennett,
Your cabin looks really big! The elk picture that you posted looks very cool too. I think that the new species would eat fish or birds or something small but not to small at the same time. it would probably eat something like that. The mountain looks different from Ashburnham because it looks like an actual mountain that has a trail.

  11. Mrs. Bennett,
I love the car you rented. The cabin you are staying at looks like a huge house. How is it at Colorado? Where did you find that deer in the picture. The picture of the forest looks way different them the one in Ashburnham because it has huge rock and like lots of catis. Well I hope you have a fun time.

  13. Dear Mrs. Bennett,
It sounds like you’re having a lot of fun luv the red car. :) I think the animal could eat other animals or plants like grass or ferns. It might make a hole for its home or take different sticks or plants to make a home it depends how big or small it is. That mountain looks like its completely covered in tress like Ashburnham a forest. It`s different because I don`t think we have that many mountains do we? That house is big does it have a lot of room? How many floors is that two? It looks like a good view though. Sorry about all the asking questions. Hope you’re having an awesome time!!!! Please write back. :)

  14. Hi Mrs. Bennett I think the new species would eat other animals. I think they might live in a hidden hole in the ground. I think that they would live in a hidden hole or something because lots of carnivores live in holes.

I think that those mountains are different from the ones in Ashburnham because the ones there are closer and they have more rocks. They are the same because they both have many trees.

i miss you and good luck

    Kathleen:)

  17. Ms. Bennett,
I think I would be a omnivore because I don't only like meat, but i also like vegetables too! i would probably live in a cave because it would be nice and roomy.

I notice that the forests there are mostly coniferous trees from what I see. In Ashburnham, we have not only coniferous trees, but also we have deciduous trees! That's how the forests are different. How they are the same is that they both have mountains. Well, we don't have mountains like that, but we do have mountains. Mountains are mountains!

Well, I hope you are having a BLAST! I also think the name of the cabin is funny too! I think your cabin looks beautiful and peaceful! I hope you get to see a bear! Have a great time a great time in Denver! Enjoy it!

  18. Mrs. Bennett,
I hope you’re having fun! And I too think your cabin's name is funny. And I think it would probably eat meat depending on if it was a carnivore, but it could be and omnivore or a herbivore. and it could depend on what size it is if its small it would probably be a herbivore if it is big it would probably a carnivore because they have a better chance of killing for meat, but then you have that one really big dinosaur that only ate plants.

And it would probably live where it was raised not in captivity but somewhere in the wild where it would not get hurt. And how I think the mountains there are different from here is the rocks sticking out from the middle of the mountain. And one way they are the same it they both have a lot of trees on the mountain.

    Have Fun,
    ABBI W

  19. If there were a new animal evolving I think it would eat rodents, birds, and small mammals. I think it would live in a cave at the very edge of the woods. I think it would look like a bear but with antlers like stag. But it would also have camouflage like a tiger

  22. That's amazing!!! I love that red rental car! When i get older i want to drive that! The mountain looks outstanding! I see a few trees getting ready for fall..... What is that deer doing? Is it eating?

My animal would Be a Carnivore it would eat meat like a poor deer that was left out and died..... It would live in the forest or the jungle.

On Sunday i was at my dad's baseball game in Lemonster I was watching as my dad got a big hit and i was chewing gum.... A few minutes later I started feeling like I had a rock in my mouth i spit out my gum and it was my tooth it was bleeding for a long time but it finaly stoped :) :) :)

    Love,
    Emily :)
